RNCM student Sam Lawson (pictured below with Fledglings 2025 musician Ola Stanton) participated in our Fledglings training programme and our Music for Health UG3 module in 2024. We were delighted that Sam has decided to further develop his hospital music making practice in 2025 by designing his own 4th year independent project, bringing music performances into the atrium at RMCH. Sam writes: “For one of my 3rd year modules at The Royal Northern College of Music, I took part in a placement with Songbirds, performing music in the atrium as well as within wards at The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Now that I am in my 4th year, I have decided to lead my own independent project at the RMCH, as a continuation of my experience and training that I received from Songbirds, having grown my confidence to take music into healthcare settings. I decided that folk violin duets would be perfect, since you can go from creating amazing harmonies together, to then providing a rhythmic groove for the other violinist, while never being overly intrusive with our sound for this setting. I believe folk music is such an accessible genre as it comes from all around the world from different countries and cultures, displaying a large variety of characters and emotions. Since each tune is very short, I hope that anyone listening will hear something they can relate to as they pass through. Performing music in healthcare settings has given me an entirely new perspective as a musician. Simply the sight of an instrument can make such a difference to a child.”
